Frequently asked questions

About the PDF Compressor

PDF files grow large because of embedded images, fonts and inefficient internal structure. The PDF Compressor re-saves your document with an optimised structure, which can shrink files that were produced by older or less efficient software.

The PDF is processed locally with the pdf-lib library. It is never uploaded to a server.

How to use it

  1. Drop your PDF onto the tool.
  2. Wait a moment while it is re-saved with an optimised structure.
  3. Compare the before and after sizes and download the new file.

Common uses

  • Getting a document under an email attachment limit.
  • Meeting a file size cap on a visa, tax or job application portal.
  • Stripping unnecessary metadata before sharing a file.

Tips for better results

  • Savings vary. PDFs exported by older tools or browsers often shrink noticeably; files from recent Word or Google Docs exports may barely change.
  • If your PDF is mostly scanned images, the biggest saving comes from re-exporting the scan at a lower resolution. Our guide on reducing PDF size walks through this.
  • If only part of the document is needed, use the PDF Splitter to extract those pages instead.

Good to know

  • Image content is preserved exactly, so image-heavy scans may not shrink much.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be processed. Remove the password first.
