Frequently asked questions
About the JSON Formatter
JSON from an API or log is usually one long unreadable line. The JSON Formatter pretty-prints it with indentation, minifies it for production, and validates it so syntax errors are easy to find.
Everything runs in your browser, so internal payloads are not sent to a third party.
How to use it
- Paste your JSON into the input box.
- Choose format to pretty-print, or minify to remove whitespace.
- Copy or download the result. If the JSON is invalid, an error message explains what went wrong.
Common uses
- Reading and debugging API responses.
- Minifying a config before pasting it into a small field or environment variable.
- Checking that hand-edited JSON is valid before deploying.
Tips for better results
- The most common errors are trailing commas, single quotes instead of double quotes and unquoted keys. JSON is stricter than JavaScript object syntax.
- Comments are not allowed in standard JSON.
- To work with spreadsheet data, convert it with the CSV to JSON tool first.
Good to know
- Very large documents, many megabytes in size, can slow down an older browser.
- Duplicate keys are not flagged. The last value for a key wins when parsed.
